Sector – 48 Hospital which was initially intended to be a general hospital for southern sectors was handed over to GMCH Chandigarh in 2018 as staff was not available with department of health to UT Chandigarh to run it as a general hospital. Since then it is being run as part of GMCH and four specialty departments i.e. dermatology, psychiatry, Radiation Oncology and Tuberculosis & Respiratory diseases (TBRD) are running in this hospital.

During Covid this hospital converted into a dedicated Covid hospital and played a vital role in managing patients with Covid. In 2022 with the waning of Covid wave, above said four departments were again transferred back to the sector 48 hospital. It is providing dedicated services to the patients who are suffering from diseases related to these specialties.

In addition OPD services in General Surgery, General Medicine, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Sample collection lab and X-ray investigations have been started from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon. Above mentioned specialty OPDs are running on different days varying from once a week to thrice a week. Hospital pharmacy is also available to provide free medicines to the OPD patients. Few rooms which have been shown to be locked are allocated for the offices of faculty of Department of Tuberculosis & Respiratory diseases (TBRD).

GOI has recently sanctioned four additional faculty posts for this department which will be recruited soon and these rooms shall stand occupied. It is further clarified that all departments running from this hospital are providing specialty services and have adequate doctors, nurses and other staff to provide.
