Way back in 1991 after the inception of the institute, department of physiology was one of the first three basic departments to be entrusted with the responsibility of imparting basic medical sciences training to the medical graduates enrolled in the institute.
We have come a long way since then under the able headship of several senior faculty members who have constantly been devising ways and means to impart updated knowledge in the field of Physiology in a highly interactive, friendly and stimulating environment.
At present the department has highly dedicated and experienced teaching staff: -

Dr. Anita S. Malhotra, MD, Professor & Head
Dr. Gurjit Kaur, M.Sc., Ph.D, Associate Professor (Biophysics)
Dr. Anumeha Bhagat, MD, DNB, Associate Professor
Dr. Kiran Prakash, MD, Assistant Professor
Dr. Dipti Magan, M.Sc., PhD, Assistant Professor
Ms.Tejinder Kaur, M.Sc., Demonstrator
Dr. Prabh Gurbaj Singh, MBBS, Demonstrator
Dr. Amandeep Thakur, MBBS, Demonstrator
Dr. Sumit Garhwal, MBBS, Demonstrator
Ms. Dimple Goyal, M.Sc., Demonstrator
Dr. Priyanka Rana, MBBS, Demonstrator

The department is currently imparting training to students of 1st Prof. MBBs along with students of other allied health sciences that include B.Sc. Nursing, Ophthalmology, and Anesthesiology. The Academic programme at the Department of Physiology encourages student’s participation in all the activities. The lectures are highly interactive and almost all the faculties probe the student’s minds during lectures. Besides this, lot of other activities such as quiz, interactive seminars, tutorials & practicals keep the students involved all the times.

For imparting practical skills there are different laboratories that include hematology, clinical physiology, experimental physiology and mammalian lab where students are first given practical demonstrations & then under guidance of teaching staff, they perform the experiments themselves.

Practical Manuals: All the practical manuals are prepared with the efforts of Faculty & Demonstrators of the department. The unique feature of these practical manuals is easy to under-stand practical instructions a step wise approach and relevant questions at the end. All the aspects related to practical are covered in a manner to enhance understanding of students.

Innovative teaching programs like horizontal, vertical integration program, quiz competitions, clinical problem based learning, undergraduate projects, etc. are routinely conducted in the department. A detailed account of these has been published in the American Physiological Society Journal, Advances in Physiology Education.

Faculties of this department are actively involved in research activities and have published research papers in many international and national journals of repute. It has many high end equipments for the research purposes. To name few as follows:-

- Finometer-for beat to beat blood pressure recording.
- AD Instruments set up- for digital data acquisition of various biopotentials and physiological
   parameters.
- Vascular ultrasound machine- for endothelial function assessment.
- Software based waveform and signal analysis system.
- ELISA reader.
- Semi-auto analyzer- for biochemical investigations.
- Set up for computerized spirometry.
- Computerized set up for Heart Rate Variability recording.
- NeuroStim equipment for various neurophysiological recordings, such as NCV, VEP, BERA, EMG etc.
- Spectrophotometer.
- Computerized equipment for arterial stiffness assessment.
- Body Composition Analyzer and Digital Student Physiograph data acquisition system are under the process of procurement.

It is being recognized that in orders to teach in the most effective manner the medical faculty themselves need to be trained first. 75% faculty in the department have successfully completed basic course workshop on medical education technologies sponsored by MCI, and a few are pursuing their fellowship in the field of research in medical education so as to further refine their teaching skills.

Currently the areas of research interest in the department are:

• Cardiovasular physiology with emphases on flow mediated ditation in early pregnancy.
• Prenatal & new born screening for genetic malformations & pre-eclampsea screening through biochemical & ultras graphic markers.
• Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and related area.
• Educational research.
• Neurophysiology.
