OUTPATIENT (OPD) DEPTT.

Location : OPD, B-Block, Level-5

          Approximately 30,000 children are seen annually in the OPD.

Facilities :

          Play room  for the children.
          Waiting Area has a facility for TV viewing. Childrens'  films 
          and health education films are played everyday.

Immunization facility : 

Daily from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday also from 2.00 to 5.00 p.m. All  vaccinations  under UPI programme of Govt. of India are provided free of cost and additional vaccines like Hepatitis B, H Influenza, MMR, Chicken Pox, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Rubella and combination vaccines are provided at subsidized  rates through the Rotary Immunization facility. Even adults can avail the facility of getting additional vaccines for themselves after getting a hospital registration card.

Information regarding normal growth & development and the related problems during adolescence Nutrition, Immunization, avoidance of risk taking behavior and how to deal with peer pressure is provided to the clients.
One to one counselling for the adolescence related problems and specialist services are     provided free of cost.

INPATIENT SERVICES

  • 24 hrs Pediatrics emergency services:   12 bedded with ventilation and monitoring facilities available.

  • Neonatal intensive care unit (A-Block, Area 11, Level-I):  
                         6 bedded nursery with facility for ventilation.
                         Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) facility for low birth weight babies.
                         Phototherapy and exchange transfusion facility available. 

  •  Pediatric ward: A-Block, Level-IV, Area 43 & 45.
                        48 beds (3-6 beds in each cubical). 
                        Facility for play room available.
                        Designated area for patient & parent counselling

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit :  A-Block, Level-III, Area 34
                        4 bedded.

  • Post Natal Ward and Kangaroo Mother Care cubicle : Area 11, A-Block

  • Community outreach service: 
    Active participation in school health services in urban & rural schools of Chandigarh, specially targeting the adolescents. Following activities are being carried out  regularly.
    Health, hemoglobin, vision, dental checkup
    and immunization.
    Impart  information to students and teachers regarding normal adolescence.

    Health Education in adolescence related problems.

Teaching & Training 

a) Undergraduate & Post Graduate

The department is engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Modern teaching methodologies and tools are used. OSCE is being used as a method of evaluation. Both submative and formative assesment is taken into consideration.

Undergraduate IAP Paediatric quiz:
Every year, the department organises pediatric quiz for undergraduates students. 

Other Activities

The department  encourages undergraduates students to take short-term research projects during vacations.

Postgraduate (PG) teaching

The department has been granted approval by the Medical Council of India for starting 3 years postgraduate (MD) course. Every year one student is admitted to the MD Paediatric course. The admission is held on basis of competitive entrance test/through CBSE.

The department trains interns, externs & junior residents in triage of patients in emergency and management of common pediatric emergencies, basic neonatal care, immunization schedule,  management of common peadiatric problem and all national programmes as per IMNCI, WHO and IAP guidelines. They actively participate in academic programmes of the department.

The department offers clinical observership to doctors, psychology students and paramedics in child development, nutrition, adolescent health, neonatal care and paediatric emergency on short term basis. The application for such courses has to be routed through Director Principal.   

Conference & CME

Every year, the department organizes CME on one single theme related to Paediatrics.

Workshops

Neonatal advanced life support workshop (NALS) has been held from time to time for participating pediatricians, medical officers, staff nurses and doctors of other specialities.

Three workshops have been held for teachers of schools & colleges of Chandigarh, teenagers and their parents on adolescent health related issues.

Workshops for training of teachers as counsellors are held by the adolescent health team.

 

Research, Projects & publications

The department has more than 60 original publications to its credit in indexed and non-indexed national & international journals and text books of pediatrics.

Projects
The department has undertaken several funded and non funded projects.

  • A  project on Adolescent Health by WHO, India was awarded in year 2002 (Department was selected as one of the six centres from whole of India) .

  • Govt. of India , H& FW in the year 2005 funded another adolescent health project with outreach facilities in the schools.

          Following out reach activities are being done under these projects:

- Sensitization of teenagers, teachers and parents on   adolescent health related issues.

 - Regular health  camps.

- Interactive sessions with teenagers on adolescent health issues.

- Workshops organized for parents and teachers to have their view-point on adolescent issues and suggesting means to tackle these.

- Distribution of iron folic acid tablets in several schools

- Providing tetanus immunization in unimmunized adolescents.

Ltd., India) combined tetravalent vaccine] with Tritanrix-HBTM (DTwP-Hepatitis B combined tetravalent vaccine, GSK Biologicals) in infants.”

 

  • Undergraduate student project: In the year 2003, two undergraduates medical students were awarded short-term projects on pediatric topics by Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi.

  • National Neonatal Perinatal Data (NNPD) Project: GMCH is one of the participating college of this multicentre project being conducted by AIIMS in collaboration with ICMR.

Other activities

  • Active participation by the department in celebration of National Neonatal week, breast feeding week, ORS week and other health related issues in the form of seminars,  group counseling of parents, painting competition, debate competition every year.  

  • Health education and IEC materials are provided for breast feeding, immunization and adolescent health periodically.

Important achievements of the faculty

  • Prof. V.R.Parmar is trained in neonatology in UK under British Council Fellowship programme.

  • Dr. Abhijeet Saha, Sr. Lecturer, has been trained in Paediatric Nephrology under IAP fellowship and international Paediatric Nephrology Association(AIIMS, Delhi) and Clinical Nephrology Training Fellowship from NUH, Singapore.

  • Dr. Banani Poddar, Reader had IAP fellowship in Paediatric Cardiology.

  • Dr. Srikanta Basu (former Sr.Lecturer)  was awarded "Ashok Nathwani visiting fellowship" by Royal College of Pediatric & Child Health, London U.K. for undergoing training in Adolescent Health.

  • Dr. Sudeshna Mitra (former Sr.Lecturer)  was trained in pediatric neurology from Cleveland Clinic, U.S.A

  • Dr. Jatinder Goraya (former Sr. Lecturer) was trained in Paediatric Neurology at Bombay and UK.
