The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology situated at Level-V, Block-B of the hospital building, deals with the medical aspects of the law and the legal aspects of medical practice. The Mortuary attached to the department is in two blocks – ‘L’ Block and ‘C’ Block (Ground Floor). It has adequate space for storing the bodies and is well equipped with modern facilities for conducting Medico Legal Post Mortem Examinations.

SERVICES

  • The department conducted 770 Medico Legal Post Mortem Examinations in the year 2011. 13,867 Medicolegal reports were prepared by the Department in the same year.

  • The department has facilities for “Embalming” of bodies – both with or without Post Mortem Examination in the attached mortuary.

  • The department also conducts Medico Legal Post Mortem Examinations in the GMSH-16, Chandigarh during the first ten days of every month and also actively participates as expert in the various boards conducted for Medico Legal Post Mortem Examinations by the GMSH-16, Chandigarh.

  • The Casualty of the Institute is under the administrative control of the department and has six posts of Emergency Medical Officers to look after the working of the casualty.

  • Interns are posted compulsorily during their rotatory Internship for 15 days in the casualty. They also have the option of joining the department for elective posting for another 15 days.

  • The department extends expert opinion in various cases to the Investigative agencies.

  • The faculty of the department delivers lectures to the trainees as well as officers of the various investigative agencies at the Central Detective Training Institute, Sector-36, Chandigarh and at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Public Administration,Sector-26, Chandigarh as well as at the State Institute of Health & Family Welfare, Punjab, Mohali     and the Central Institute of Health & Family Welfare, under the Ministry of Health, Govt. of India.

  • Besides the above, the department conducts training classes for the MSc. Anthropology students of the Punjab University, Patiala and the BHMS students     of the Homoeopathic College, Sector-26, Chandigarh.

  • Medico Legal age estimation of the cases coming to the Institute are done by the faculty of the department.  

TEACHING

The department has been rendering services in the form of teaching to 50 MBBS students of 4th semester & 50 students of 3rd semester every year. Post Graduation Programme has been started since 2003 with annual intake of one PG student, after approval by the Medical Council of India.

The department has also been extending medicolegal training to the interns during their compulsory Rotatory internship.
